Festivities of San Clemente in Lorca
In mid-November, the Fiestas de San Clemente begin, a few days full of religious activities and acts of celebration in honour of San Clemente, the Patron Saint of Lorca, as well as medieval markets, gastronomic tastings, parades and activities for the youngest members of the family.
What do Lorca's patron saint festivities consist of?
The festivities begin about ten days before 23 November, during which time processions and masses are held in honour of San Clemente, accompanied by parades and processions.
There are also other activities such as a medieval market, a night of candles, in which everyone can participate with candles, torches or candles, to make a pilgrimage to the castle.
On the 23rd of November, the city carries out a representation of the dispute that existed between the Christian hosts and the Muslim cabilas with respect to the territory, for this reason it is also known as the Moors and Christians Festival of Lorca.
Origin of the Patron Saint Fiestas in honour of San Clemente in Lorca
There is little information regarding the origin of these festivities. Some say that the city was reconquered by the Christians by capitulation on 23 November 1244. Others say that the reconquest was because the Christians won over the Moors, after heavy fighting.
In any case, the reconquest of the city by the Christians is celebrated on 23 November.
